Nissan to debut improved Leaf in December

Bilde
Nissan Motor Co. is upgrading its electric vehicle Leaf when it rolls out a new version by year's end, adding leather seats, a darker new interior and a more efficient heating system.

Mark Perry, director of product and advanced planning for Nissan Americas, said the Japanese automaker is on track to double sales in 2012; it sold about 9,700 Nissan Leafs in the United States in 2011. Nissan only recently rolled out the Leaf to all 50 states a few weeks ago.

When Nissan was designing the Leaf five years ago, it thought about leather as an option. "We were like, 'Ah, let's do the clean, green recycled materials,'" Perry said in an interview.

But Nissan's customers told them otherwise, saying they want leather, Perry said. "People want a dark interior, so we're to give them a dark interior, too."

General Motors Co. offers its extended-range electric Chevrolet Volt in a leather trim option. GM spokesman Rob Peterson said about three-quarters of Volt models sold or leased have leather.

The Leaf — by far the best-selling electric vehicle in the United States — outsold the Chevrolet Volt in 2011. About 7,600 Volts were sold last year, below the forecast of 10,000.

But the Volt outsold the Leaf in February; sales of the Leaf fell to 478 that month. Perry said he expects that sometime this summer Nissan will be selling 2,000 or more Leafs a month in the United States.

Nissan will unveil the upgraded 2013 Leaf in December when it begins producing the car in Smyrna, Tenn. Nissan won $1.4 billion in Energy Department loans in January 2010 to build batteries and up to 150,000 electric vehicles annually in the United States.

Buyers in Minnesota had been waiting for 18 months until it went on sale recently. As a result, Minnesotans have had the highest daily volume buyers of the Leaf in recent days, Perry said.

Consumer Reports' senior director of its auto testing center David Champion has said the range of the Leaf dropped dramatically in cold weather when the heater was turned on. Perry says the 2013 Leaf will have a "much, much more efficient" heater that will dramatically extend the Leaf's range in cold weather.

The Environmental Protection Agency rates the Leaf's range at 73 miles, but Nissan has said it can go up to 100 miles on a single charge, depending on driving conditions and weather. "You may not see much change on the EPA rating, but in cold-weather conditions you may see 20 to 25 miles of improvements," Perry said.

Nissan will unveil a prototype of a concept Infiniti electric vehicle at the New York International Auto Show next month.

The company hasn't named the EV or said when it will be available.

Perry said that high gas prices are causing more people to consider buying EVs. "After you pay that $80 to fill up your tank, you get ticked off and you say, 'I want to look at an electric.''

Nissan is reviving Datsun brand

Datsunx-large
After abandoning the Datsun name nearly 30 years ago, Nissan is reviving the brand for economy cars sold in developing markets.

According to Reuters, the Datsun brand would return to countries such as India, Russia and Indonesia for cars priced about $6,200. Nissan wants a subbrand to let it sell inexpensive cars in developing markets, without damaging the Nissan brand reputation.

Toyota and Honda face similar challenges in developing markets. French carmaker Renault, a Nissan partner, currently builds cheaper cars under the Dacia brand, with such cars as the Dacia Logan or Nissan Aprio (for Mexico). Similar models could be considered for Datsun. Nissan hopes to sell about 300,000 vehicles a year under the Datsun brand, sources tell Reuters.

The original Datsuns, from pickups to sedans to the cool 240Z above that’s still fondly remembered by Baby Boomers, were essentially Nissan-brand cars rebadged for export. Nissan sold cars in the U.S. under the name until the early 1980s.

2013 Nissan GT-R: First Drive

The 2013 Nissan GT-R at Palm Beach International Raceway

Nissan's GT-R sport coupe, launched in Japan in late 2007 and in the U.S. mid-2008, is the continuation of the storied Nissan Skyline GT-R. Throughout its history, the GT-R's blend of stunning performance and reasonable value has earned the car legions of fans worldwide.

If you’ve never had the opportunity to drive a Nissan GT-R, the experience can be somewhat surreal. Thanks to plenty of horsepower and all-wheel-drive grip, acceleration is impressive, even for us jaded-auto-journalist types.

Mat the accelerator pedal, and the GT-R launches like a bullet from a gun. One minute you’re standing still, while the next you’re being hurtled through time and space as if being moved by the hand of God. Or in this case, the hand of Godzilla.

Nissan upped the ante on its 2012 GT-R, boosting output from its 3.8-liter, twin- turbo V-6 to 530 horsepower (from 485 hp) and raising torque to 448 pound-feet (from 434 lb.-ft). The body was mildly restyled, too, in an effort to improve airflow and reduce lift at speed.

The net result was that an already-impressively-fast car became even faster, while maintaining its bargain-basement pricing (by supercar standards, anyway). Most manufacturers would be content to revise a few interior bits for the next year and call it done, but that’s not the GT-R way.

The staff behind the development of the GT-R operates more like a race team than an automaker, and it’s continually looking for ways to improve the product. For 2013, the GT-R gets even more horsepower and torque, courtesy of ported and polished cylinder heads. Expect 545 horsepower and 463 pound-feet of torque from new models.

Intercooler breathing is improved, too, and transmission shift feel is better than last year. The suspension has been retuned with a slight spring rate increase, and the Bilstein DampTronic shocks now use a “bypass valve” system to increase ride comfort. New model-specific Dunlop tires round out the package.

To highlight the differences between last year’s car and this year’s model, Nissan is currently running a program for journalists, dealers and existing GT-R owners called “The GT-R Experience.”

By allowing us to drive 2012 and 2013 models back-to-back, through exercises meant to showcase the new car’s abilities, Nissan hopes to illustrate what’s been improved on the 2013 model.

First up was an eighth-mile drag race, followed by a 0-60-0 mph run. While 15 horsepower and 15 more pound feet of torque may not sound like much, the difference in acceleration is noticeable. In case you can’t feel it on the “butt-dyno,” the 0-60-0 run, which takes less room in the 2013 car, gives a good benchmark.

Next up was a short handling course, meant to illustrate the difference in suspension from 2012 to 2013. Even with the shocks in the center, “normal” setting, the stiffer springs produced flatter corning at turn-in. The ride quality was noticeably improved, too, adding to the GT-R’s appeal as a daily driver.

Once Nissan was satisfied that us media types wouldn’t stack $100,000 sports cars, we were sent to an autocross track to work with instructors from the Skip Barber school. Again the difference between the 2012 GT-R and the 2013 GT-R was immediately apparent.

The 2013 model pulled harder down the short straight, and with the suspension in “Comfort” mode actually worked better through the course’s quick left-right-left corners. When you consider that the GT-R has a curb weight of 3,829 pounds, its ability to quickly transition from corner to corner seems to defy physics.
