At the auto show, Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn said he expects the Altima to outsell its predecessor enough to "take a shot at being No. 1 in the segment" — meaning it would unseat the Toyota Camry, the best-selling car in America since 2001. The Altima is right on the Camry's tail, falling short by fewer than 10,000 sales through March.
That means car shoppers should keep an eye out for possible deals at year's end on both cars as Nissan and Toyota duke it out. That's uncommon for newly redesigned cars but possible here given the stakes involved in the arms race to claim the title of "best-selling car in the country."
Given all those factors, among others, we expect the new Altima to see a 39% increase in sales by year's end, compared with the previous year. How'd we make our prediction?
A redesigned car typically outsells its predecessor. By analyzing all 48 model redesigns from the 2009, 2010 and 2011 model years, we determined that the best-selling redesigned cars sold, on average, 30% above market growth.
For Nissan, the growth would be 24% above market growth of roughly 15%, and that should satisfy Nissan. Still, given the right circumstances, we think the Altima could have done even better. Here's why:
Despite the daunting competitive landscape, if the Altima can capture that No. 1 crown the entire Nissan brand could see a lift in consumer consideration.
Starting at the left is the Versa hatchback; its sedan sibling was unveiled last year so an updated hatchback seemed sure to follow. The hulking vehicle next to it has to be the new Pathfinder. There's no surprise there: The concept unveiled in Detroit was virtually production-ready. It forecasts the end of the Pathfinder's traditional body-on-frame architecture as well as some of its boxy, truck-like exterior styling cues. In its place are the curvy, fluid lines of a crossover. The 2013 Nissan Pathfinder goes on sale this fall.
In the middle is the new Altima, which recently met the public at the New York auto show. Nissan's midsize sedan gets a new four-cylinder engine, automatic transmission, chassis, suspension and interior and goes on sale this summer.
Nissan is mum about which vehicle will debut next, but we expect to see the Versa, Rogue or Sentra on next year's auto show circuit.

After a grueling process of elimination that has taken several years, New York has chosen Nissan's littlest and newest commercial van, the 2014 NV200, as the Taxi of Tomorrow.
The Nissan van won the honors in a process that started in 2007, when city officials set the criteria to figure out which vehicles would best serve New York's 600,000 daily taxi users. The contract, according to some reports, is probably worth about 4,000 units per year, and the van will be a welcome upgrade for those visiting the Big Apple.
For those nostalgia buffs, the ubiquitous Ford Crown Victoria will be around for quite a while, but if you find your way into one of the new Nissans, you might be surprised how much nicer and roomier the new taxis are.
"The Nissan NV200 unveiled today will be the safest, most comfortable and most convenient taxi the city has ever had," New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said. "New York City cabs have always been iconic, and now they will set a new standard. The 600,000 passengers who use taxis to get around every day deserve the cutting-edge technology and top-of-the-line safety features that this model delivers."
Features of the NV200 taxi include:
Nissan has partnered with Braun Corp. to develop, engineer and produce a creative solution for a wheelchair-accessible taxi in New York. Nissan will offer a mobility solution to New York taxi companies and have that taxi go on sale in 2013.
As part of the Taxi of Tomorrow program, Nissan is working with the city and taxi owners on a pilot program to study the use of zero-emission electric taxis as well. Nissan will provide six Nissan Leafs and three Level 2 charging stations at no extra charge to taxi owners and the city to test the possible electrification of New York's taxi fleet.
The NV200 taxi will be produced in North America at Nissan's manufacturing facility in Cuernavaca, Mexico. The MSRP of the vehicle, with all planned standard features, is expected to be about $29,700.
