Nissan GT-R Hybrid Powertrain Hinted by Executive

V

Rumors of a hybrid GT-R to come out sometime between 2017 and 2018 emerged late last year. During the New York Auto Show, Munoz said there will be news later this year that will “electrify” GT-R fans worldwide.

While that’s hardly an announcement, Nissan is integrating hybrid powertrains into more of its Infiniti line, and the jump to the GT-R wouldn’t necessarily be a hard one to make.

The Infiniti Essence concept from 2009 featured a twin-turbo 3.7-liter V6 in conjunction with a hybrid drivetrain. Nissan’s NISMO performance arm is also building an electrified race car for Le Mans in 2014.

Car Tip of the Week: Heavier is not always better

Use the oil viscosity grade that’s recommended in your owner’s manual for the temperature range you expect for the coming season. Lighter grades (lower viscosity, such as SAE 5W-30), often specified for today’s smaller car engines, will deliver easier starts and better engine protection in winter and improved gas mileage throughout the year, thanks to less internal engine friction. Do not use a heavy grade of oil in cold winter climes or you will risk damage to your engine.

Quick Car Tip: Park in the shade whenever possible.

Minimize interior damage from UV sunlight and heat by always trying to park your car in the shade when possible. If no shade is available you can still use a car shade in your windshield to minimize the sun’s impact. As a bonus, you’ll have a cooler car to step into on those hot sunny days.

Car Tip of the Week: Change oil frequently

Your dad knew that frequent oil changes were key to keeping his Buick on the road another year. And while owner’s manuals for today’s cars recommend increasing long intervals between oil changes, the fact remains — frequent changes flush abrasive dirt and metal particles out of the engine, prolonging its life. Most owner’s manuals recommend a more frequent interval for “severe conditions.” To maximize the life of your engine, follow the severe intervals recommendations, especially if drive regularly in stop-and-go traffic.
