Nissan to supply New York cabs from next year

Nissan
Nissan is supplying New York city with fuel-efficient cabs, including six electric cars for testing, but acknowledged uncertainties about the ongoing war over charging standards for electric vehicles.

Nissan Motor Co. said Tuesday its gasoline engine NV200 vehicles, painted yellow, will start operating as New York taxis in October 2013. Six Leaf electric vehicles will be part of a pilot program this year.

Nissan Executive Vice President Andy Palmer said it's unclear whether nations will adopt the "CHAdeMo" standard used by Nissan for charging electric vehicles, or the competing one backed by General Motors Co. and others.

The standards use different plugs and aren't compatible.

Nissan Enhances Certified Pre-Owned Programs With Carfax

Renderimage
Nissan North America, Inc. (NNA) has selected Carfax as the exclusive vehicle history provider for their Nissan and Infiniti Certified Pre-Owned programs. As of May 1, 2012, Carfax® Vehicle History Reports(TM) are a requirement for the Nissan and Infiniti certification process.

"Nissan and Infiniti brands set all-time sales records in Certified Pre-Owned sales this past fiscal year, delivering over 110,000 units, and we expect further growth with our program enhancements," said Marty Gleason, Senior Manager, Certified Pre-Owned. "The Nissan and Infiniti Certified Pre-Owned programs drive higher customer loyalty for future vehicle purchases as well as stronger service retention."

The Nissan and Infiniti Certified Pre-Owned programs build consumer confidence through a factory-backed 100,000 mile limited warranty. The certification process requires pre-owned vehicles with less than 60,000 miles, which must pass a rigorous inspection process that includes a clean title and Carfax Vehicle History Report. Nissan and Infiniti certified vehicles also qualify for the Carfax Buyback Guarantee.

"The overwhelming majority of customers coming to our stores ask for a Carfax Report," said Jeffrey Cappo, owner of Victory Auto Group. "We are diligent about running Carfax Reports at acquisition and making sure every customer gets one at retail. Having Carfax provide vehicle history for the Nissan Certified Pre-Owned program makes a lot of sense to me."

Consumers get a free Carfax Vehicle History Report with every Certified Nissan and Infiniti vehicle sold at Certified Nissan and Infiniti dealerships. Thirty-four manufacturers choose Carfax to build confidence in their Certified Pre-Owned programs.

"While in the market for a used car I came across a Certified Pre-Owned Nissan Maxima at our local dealership," said recent Nissan customer John Drewes of New York. "The Carfax Report we got showed lots of maintenance records and that it was a 1-Owner vehicle. Seeing all the detailed information on the Carfax Report really blew me away. I purchased the car based on the fact it was a Certified Nissan and the information on the Carfax Report."

"DARCARS customers expect the best," said Tammy Darvish, owner of DARCARS. "After a thorough evaluation, Carfax has proven to be the best choice for our cars and our business. We won't sell any used car without a Carfax Report. I'm confident it's the right choice for the Nissan and Infiniti Certified programs as well."

"Great data helps drive great Certified Pre-Owned programs," said Joe Koenig, vice president of Carfax. "Knowing about important details like previous accidents, ownership history and routine service is imperative to proving the quality of your vehicles. We are excited by Nissan's trust in Carfax to build consumer confidence for their Certified Nissan and Infiniti units."

Nissan aims new 2013 Altima to topple Camry as No. 1

Applaudx-wide-community
Twenty years and 4.4 million Altimas after the first one rolled off the line at Nissan's Smyrna, Tenn., plant, the first car of the redesigned fifth-generation just rolled off line today.

And there was talk in the air of this version of Nissan's top seller -- and a frequent No. 2-selling car in the U.S. -- finally knocking off Toyota's Camry as America's best-selling car.

By Nissan, Wieck

Nissan bragged that this is just the first of five new vehicles due over the next five quarters -- including the new-gen Pathfinder and Rogue -- but this redesign may be the company's most important. The mid-size sedan is Nissan's bread and butter -- its best-selling and best-known model.

And in its quest to knock Camry off the throne, Nissan says it benchmarked the redesign against tough, upscale cars of similar size. including the Audi A4 and BMW 3-Series.

The governor of Tennessee, Bill Haslam, was here with Nissan brass for the roll-off of the first of the Altimas that will keep a lot of jobs in his state. He joined in the challenge to Toyota, which builds the Camry next door in Kentucky: "If I happened to work at a certain place in Georgetown (Ky.), I'd be very nervous about holding onto that No. 1."

And Bill Krueger, Nissan vice chairman, at an executive roundtable after the first car rolled off, was blunt: Certainly we did not put all this investment into the product to be No. 2.

By Toyota

He said Nissan is ready to ramp up Altima production for the run at Camry. Nissan already plans to also begin building Altimas at its Canton, Miss., factory. "We will have the capacity to eventually to build enough Altimas to outsell Camry."

But Krueger said there are limits to what Nissan will do to try to knock off Camry. "We are not willing to cut and trim profit margins to beat a number a our competitor has out there."

By last year's tally, passing Camry would take selling at least 350,000 Altimas -- maybe closer to 400,000, with the auto industry sales recovery continuing and sales of Toyota's refreshed-for-2012 Camry taking off.

Nissan targets 'pragmatists' to buy its electric Leaf

Leafx-wide-community
With more a year in the market, the Nissan Leaf all-electric car has pretty much run through the early adopters. Now, the Japanese automaker plans to focus on marketing to "pragmatists," people who will see the dollars-and-sense benefits of driving one, a top executive said today.

The push will especially important now that Leaf production is moving from Japan to the U.S. There will be a lot more Leafs -- Leaves? -- that need to be sold, said Nissan Executive Vice President Andy Palmer.

With an EPA-rated range of 73 miles before it needs a recharge and a price of more than $33,000, the Leaf has been bought by EV fans. But now needs to break into the mainstream and Palmer says he can make the case. He notes less than a third of European commuters drive less than 62 miles a day.

"Pragmatists" will see the Leaf can save them money based on their commuting habits, Palmer says. They don't care that much if the car isn't all that great looking and have no great need to show off to their neighbors. It's not about the car being an environmental. It's about it being a practical solution to basic transportation.

When Leafs are being built in Tennessee, Nissan will finally get the economies of scale to make the Leaf more profitable. "There's no reason, though the life cycle of Leaf, why we shouldn't have a profitable car," Palmer said at the Electric Car Symposium in Los Angeles, EVS26. "We needed economies of scale. I see no reason why shouldn't be profitable."

Pragmatists, a group that includes a lot of engineers, tend to travel a lot, Palmer says. As such, Nissan is putting ads up in airports around the world for Leaf to reach them.

Nissan Juke-R Scheduled for Limited Production Starting This Summer

Nissan-juke-r-front-three-quarter-623x389
The Juke-R may have been just a prototype, but now Nissan says it will put the high-performance crossover into limited production. The Juke-R melds the mechanical components of the Nissan GT-R with the body of a Juke crossover. Back in January, we called upon Nissan to consider building the Juke-R — read Jonny Lieberman’s blog right here.

Nissan has so far received three orders for a copy of the Nissan Juke-R, and is currently taking orders for more examples of the car. A month from now, production of the Juke-R will begin in limited numbers. The best news for customers, however, is that the production Juke-R models will get a performance boost. While the two prototypes built employed the mechanicals of the 2010 GT-R and extracted 485 hp and 434 lb-ft of torque from a twin-turbo 3.8-liter V-6 engine, versions of the Juke-R destined for customers will use the running gear from the 2013 GT-R. The new car’s engine has been upgraded to 545 hp and 463 lb-ft, which could make the Juke-R even quicker than the 3.7-second 0-to-62-mph time previously quoted.

Nissan Juke R Scheduled for Limited Production Starting This Summer imageOther modifications on the prototype Juke-R included widening the body by 5.7 inches, fitting the suspension from the Nissan GT-R, installing all-wheel drive, reinforcing the chassis and adding a roll cage, and bolting on sundry aerodynamic parts to help keep the car stable as it approaches its 160-mph top speed.

The Juke-R was originally conceived as a prototype that was first shown in Dubai last year, but Juke marketing manager Gareth Dunsmore said public response to the car was overwhelming.

“People were making offers for the original on the street,” he said in a statement. “With such a strong reaction, and with three genuine offers on the table, we decided we had to make the car a reality.”

There’s no word yet on pricing for the Juke-R, or in which markets it will be available, although Nissan notes that two of the three orders so far came from “a high-profile and well-respected member of Dubai society.” The first three cars will be delivered to customers this summer. A Nissan spokesman in the U.S. said that at this point there are no solid plans for the Juke-R to be sold here; given the car was a special project developed in the U.K. by Nissan’s European arm, we think North American availability is quite unlikely.

To celebrate the production debut of the Juke-R, Nissan also has released a new video showing the build-up to a street race between the car and a Lamborghini, a Ferrari, and a Mercedes-Benz in Dubai. Embedded below, Nissan says the clip “gives us the opportunity to see the Juke-R find its place among the world’s elite at Dubai’s International Marina Club. Nissan previously released a series of ten videos documenting the build process of the Juke-R prototype, culminating with a clip showing the car undergoing a shakedown test at a track in the U.K.

Sony to Offer Free GT Academy 2012 Demo to Gamers

Renderimage
Nissan North America (NNA) will again partner with Sony Computer Entertainment America LLC (SCEA) and Polyphony Digital Inc. for a second season of the popular non-scripted TV series GT Academy in the U.S., airing on Spike TV network later this year.

GT Academy challenges gamers and racing fans to compete in a series of online time trials in pre-selected Nissan vehicles for a shot at becoming a real racing driver. Last year's competition drew over 53,000 competitors nationwide, with 30-year old Californian Bryan Heitkotter emerging as the winner. Heitkotter has gone on to compete in races for Nissan in the United States, Middle East and Europe.

"Nissan GT Academy is a truly unique opportunity," says 2011 champion Heitkotter. "For me traveling and racing around the world has been an amazing, life changing experience so far, and I know we can achieve even more."

This year's competition promises to reach a much larger gaming audience, as prospective players can download the Sony GT Academy 2012 demo free online via the PlayStation Network (PSN) starting today.

Registration for the GT Academy competition runs from June 11-24 for those who think they can compete for one of the top 32 spots in the finals, to be held in July. From there, the top 16 players in the country will move on to the GT Academy "boot camp," where they will face a week-long series of grueling physical and mental challenges, including getting behind the wheel of actual Nissan cars to prove their driving skills. Along the way, participants will be eliminated until only one remains. The competitors' road to victory will be documented in a multi-episode reality show airing exclusively on Spike TV in late 2012.

Kazunori Yamauchi, President of Polyphony Digital, adds: "It makes me very proud to see the graduates of the GT Academy racing around the world with Nissan. This year we are aiming to make GT Academy bigger and better than ever before and so I am creating a new series of driving challenges open to anyone with a PS3 (terms and conditions will apply). You don't have to be an expert to have a go. Added to that, each country will host live GT Academy entry events to ensure that as many people as possible can enter the 2012 GT Academy."

Jon Brancheau, Vice President of Marketing at NNA said, "Nissan North America is delighted to again partner with Sony Entertainment to give another top-tier video gamer the opportunity to pilot real Nissan racing cars on the track. We are proud of Bryan Heitkotter's development as a racer and look forward to a much larger group of players this year, with the addition of a free online GT Academy demo from PlayStation Network and a larger broadcast audience on Spike TV. Gran Turismo 5 showcases Nissan performance and innovation like no other virtual experience, and it's exciting to see GT Academy bring those attributes to life on the racetrack."

Beginning today, players in the U.S. can download GT Academy 2012 FREE on PlayStation Store through the PlayStation®3. Designed to turn the best Gran Turismo players into real-life race drivers, this year's GT Academy welcomes players of all levels. Each participant will compete in a series of virtual trials, piloting Nissan cars, over an eight-week period in 40 different events. Each round features five events that players can retry as many times as they want. Only the fastest lap times will be recorded and ranked. Rounds 1 and 2 are the first set of trials to open.

The last stage of the eight-week competition will serve as the finale-- Round 8, Event 5 -- where it all boils down to one FINAL online time trial challenge. Only the fastest lap times will go up on the national leader boards, so in order to move up in the rankings, the player must continually improve their performance. Their fastest lap in Round 8, Event 5 will determine if they have what it takes to move on to the GT Academy 2012 National Finals.
