NYC deploying six Nissan LEAF's in Taxi of Tomorrow pilot program

Nyc-leaf-taxi-of-tomorrow

Beginning in the Spring of 2012, New York City plans to deploy six all-electric Nissan LEAF's in the taxi fleet. It's a pilot program leading towards NYC's Taxi of Tomorrow program which is hoped to, eventually, include routine use of zero emissions vehicles in that city's taxi fleet.

The project, a joint venture between Nissan and New York City's Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC), is a step towards NYC's Taxi of Tomorrow vision begun in 2007. A City working group including taxi drivers, owners and riders, developed requirements for what would be a purpose-designed taxi. These requirements includes things like anti-bacterial seats, more luggage room, easy access without needing to twist or pivot to become seated, economical operation partly due to fuel efficiency, and the capability to be manufactured with an electric drive train. In May 2011, Nissan's NV200 was selected as the winning design and is expected to go into service in late 2013. In the meantime deploying a few LEAF's into Taxi service will help both Nissan and New York City learn about using an electric car in taxi service.

The program opened to applicants a couple months ago, and both independent owner-drivers and taxi fleet operators were free to apply. The participants will be selected in January 2012, and will receive a free lease for up to one year along with a taxi medallion with which to operate the taxi. The participants will be picking up passengers and collecting fares like normal, and are required to send in feedback to Nissan and NYC throughout the program.

Of course operating range will be an issue because the Leaf has a 62-138 mile driving range depending on driving habits. Achieving the 138 mile range would take the cabbie driving at a slower speed than they're typically known for. The TLC's information packet spelled this out very carefully, cautioning participants they'll most likely need to stop mid-shift to recharge, taking either 15 minutes or 3 (or more) hours depending on the charging station being used. NYC has very few charging stations, primarily on Manhattan. Charging stations will be installed at fleet garages, owner-drivers homes, and perhaps at the airports.

The program would seem to work best if fast chargers were available but a quick scan of the stations visible through the ReCargo app shows none, and that existing charging stations are (understandably) primarily located in parking garages. One can imagine taxi stands in a different configuration than is typical today, where there is a line of charging stations letting taxi's grab an opportunity charge while waiting for their next fare. Today's taxi stands aren't configured this way, meaning grabbing a recharge would happen separately from waiting for a fare.

This is not the first time electric taxi's have been used in New York. In 1897 an electric taxi fleet was put into operation by Electric Carriage and Wagon which included some advanced features like quickly exchangeable battery packs allowing cabs to remain on the streets for more hours of the day.

Fossil fuel combustion in gasoline or diesel transportation vehicles make up 27 percent of our national greenhouse gas emissions. This program is a very small step in NYC's ambitious climate change mitigation strategy. NYC has a fleet of 13,000 taxi's, approximately 4500 of which are hybrid vehicles, which just says there's a long way to go to clean up NYC's taxi's.

2012 Nissan Quest Minivan offers hi-tech comfort

2011-12-22_1334
The Nissan Quest minivan has been produced since 1993, but most of us have forgotten those dark days when it was a re-badged Mercury Villager. Since 2004, the Quest has been a Nissan-unique vehicle.

Built on the same platform as the current Nissan Maxima, Altima and Murano, its 118.1-inch wheelbase and 200.8-inch overall length give the Quest family hauler a roomy interior and maneuverable overall size.

It's difficult to design a minivan that doesn't look much different from the typical box on wheels, but Nissan has succeeded in creating a unique appearance that makes it instantly recognizable. Full surround privacy glass, black sash molding and chrome trim accents combine with the wide, low stance to give Quest a dynamic and distinctive appearance. Trinkets such as chrome door handles and rear roof spoiler make the 2012 Nissan Quest stand out in a crowd. The Quest exterior design is also one of the most wind-efficient, with a 0.32 Cd for the Quest S model.

The 2012 Quest is offered in four models: S, SV, SL and LE. The Quest S is the base model with minimal standard equipment. Moving upward in the progression, each model gets more and more standard equipment, making the top-of-the-line LE almost luxurious.

The Quest is a comfortable and roomy way to take care of routine family travel needs, and it's also ideal for an occasional long vacation trip. Prices start at $27,750 for the S; $31,050 for the SV; $34,500 for the SL; and $41,350 for the LE.

All models come with power sliding side doors and power-opening windows. Quest's door rail system is designed to make the sliding door step-in height lower than competitive minivans.

The interior layout includes quick-release fold-flat second and third row seats. The 60/40-split third-row seat can be switched from upright to fold-flat position with the simple pull of one strap or push of a button. A spring assist helps the manual fold and return operation. There's a standard second row walk-in device for easier access to the third row.

Front seating includes a special "trilaminar" structure, which uses three types of cushions to distribute body pressure more evenly than traditional padding, and the first application of Nissan's Quick Comfort front seat heaters. When activated, this sophisticated system immediately begins warming the body parts that are most sensitive to heat, such as the thighs and hips. Then, to maintain a warm, cozy feeling, the heater increases heating on body pressure points.

A new climate control system works three ways to help reduce allergens and unwanted odors inside the cabin. Its air-intake control has sensors to monitor outside odors and automatically closes the intake port to prevent inflow of exhaust fumes or other unpleasant smells.

The new system uses a special filter to help reduce the number of allergens in the interior air and it generates ions to "scrub" the interior air of unwanted odors -- whether they come from outside or inside the vehicle. Upscale models feature a tri-zone automatic temperature control system.

A range of audio systems is also available, starting with the Quest S model's AM/FM/6CD system with four speakers. A Bose premium audio system with AM/FM/CD/DVD and 13 speakers is available. A USB port with iPod connectivity is available on some models.

The only powertrain available is 3.5-liter DOHC V-6 and Nissan's Xtronic continuously variable transmission. With 260 horsepower and 240 lb ft of torque, fuel economy is estimated at 19 miles per gallon city and 24 mpg highway.

The four-wheel independent suspension uses struts with coil springs up front and a multi-link design in the rear for nicely balanced ride and handling qualities. Brakes are four-wheel discs and steering is speed-sensitive, power-assisted rack-and-pinion design.

The 2012 Quest also offers standard stability control, anti-lock brakes, dual-stage supplemental front airbags and a full array of popular safety features. A blind spot warning system is available on some models.

The 2012 Nissan Quest is more than just another standard minivan -- it's a new take on innovation for the family. From its bold styling with full surround glass to its extensive list of family friendly features and innovations, Quest also brings dynamic performance to the minivan segment. The 2012 Quest features a 3.5-liter V6 with 260 hp and 240 lb ft of torque.

Nissan previews all-new Pathfinder

113395662

The car companies have teased us a lot this week. Sketches. Badly cropped detail shots. Car covers. When will this bullying stop?

Now Nissan has jumped on the band wagon with this teaser shot of its next Pathfinder.

This is as much as Nissan is prepared to show us until the SUV's unveiling at the Detroit Motor Show early next month but the silhouette does at least show us that the aging Pathfinder will have a more carlike design.

Nissan elaborates: “The Nissan Pathfinder Concept takes all of Pathfinder's traditional SUV hallmarks and wraps them in a new platform and dramatic new aerodynamic body.”

It should be rather practical and versatile too: “With thoughtful technology, comfortable seating for seven and ample cargo room, the 4-wheel drive Pathfinder Concept previews the next-gen production Pathfinder that is scheduled to go on sale in the third quarter of 2012.”

Now, assuming that this new Pathfinder will once again be based on the Navara bakkie, it should be safe to assume that Nissan has another ace up its sleeve in that department.

With formidable new rivals like the Ford Ranger and VW Amarok lurking around - the bakkie game is not waiting for anyone.

Nissan confirms Pathfinder concept and more for Detroit

01-2014-nissan-pathfinder-spy-shots-628
Nissan is gearing up for the Detroit Auto Show and two new concepts will grace the automaker's show stand, along with a Detroit-inspired food truck to keep the throngs satiated.

But more important than free hipster grub is the introduction of the Pathfinder Concept, which Nissan claims will inspire the next-generation utility vehicle's styling before the production model debuts later in 2012 and goes on sale towards the end of next year. Considering the current Pathfinder has been around since 2005 (with a facelift in 2008), it's due for a thorough overhaul. Persistent rumors have suggested that the next Pathfinder will eschew the body-on-frame architecture of the outgoing model in favor of a more car-like unibody.

Joining the Pathfinder Concept will be an all-electric van which we're assuming could be based on the NV series. Nissan says it's a concept that's suitable for both families and businesses, and continues its commitment to emissions-free motoring. Check the release after the break for the full details.

Microsoft and Nissan launch cloud partnership

Nissan-motor_400
Microsoft and Nissan announced a “strategic relationship” on Monday to develop a dealer management system for use in the Japanese automaker’s cars.

The two companies said the system would use the US technology group’s Microsoft Dynamics CRM software to develop tools to strengthen Nissan’s relationship with its customers, drive sales, and increase its global market share.

The system will use Microsoft’s Windows Azure platform, and take advantage of the US technology company’s public cloud-computing offerings to allow Nissan to connect with its customers.

Nissan said that the new system would initially be rolled out at Nissan’s dealership networks in Japan and “other strategic regions across the globe”. The two companies gave no details on when they planned to begin implementing the system, or in which overseas markets.

They said they also planned to study how Microsoft Dynamics CRM and Windows Azure might work together as a platform to deploy applications across the carmaker’s global network and standardise its information architecture on the cloud.

The collaboration is the latest of several between a carmaker and a technology company as both industries seek to bring more of the connectivity available in mobile devices into automobiles.

Microsoft has described cars as the third fastest-growing connected device after mobile phones and tablet computers. The US company worked with Ford Motor to develop the Sync in-car information and entertainment system launched in the US automaker’s vehicles from 2007.

Carmakers are eager not to be left behind by the digital revolution, and are looking for ways to enhance their customers’ relationships with dealers at a time when their profits are under pressure from the economic slowdown.

The industry is also looking to develop technology to help drivers and dealers keep tabs on battery power and other service issues special to new-generation electric and plug-in hybrid cars.

Nissan is aiming to improve customer loyalty and its dealers’ performance as part of “Power 88”, the six-year performance plan announced by Carlos Ghosn, the carmaker’s chief executive, in June.

Nissan is developing four electric vehicles, an area in which it and its French partner Renault are seeking to build a technological lead over rivals.

Future Nissan Leafs To Be Charged Wirelessly

Leaf-101203-54
Future Nissan Leaf owners won't have to fuss about with plugging in their car, as upcoming versions of the electric vehicle will be able to charge wirelessly.

The system utilizes a ground transmission unit to provide the vehicle with electrical power using electromagnetic induction. You simply park over top of the unit on the ground and the car starts charging.

According to Auto Express, the wireless charging system is expected to be available on Leaf models starting in 2013 and it takes approximately the same amount of time to fully charge the vehicle as the standard plug-in set-up.

However, even though the system doesn't require much more than new software and a pad for the battery system, the report claims that older Leaf models can't be retrofitted to make use of the wireless charging.

Nissan Gives 2012 Leaf Sporty Makeover, Announces 2012 Leaf Nismo

Admit it: You like the 2012 Nissan Leaf, but you yearn for the extra performance and sporting pedigree of Nissan’s custom-built, mid-engined, Nissan Leaf Nismo RC race car

Sadly, you’re unlikely to ever be given the chance to own your very own Nissan Leaf Nismo RC, but Nissan has just announced that it plans to bring a race-inspired street-legal version of the Leaf to market that will give you the extra performance you yearn for.

Unveiled at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show, the Leaf Nismo concept is a cross between a conventional Nissan Leaf and its race-going sibling. Wearing 18-inch black alloy wheels, a full sports bodykit with white paintwork and blue LED under-body lighting, the Leaf Nismo looks a little like an extra from Need for Speed

But according to Andy Palmer, Nissan’s executive vice president for planning, there’s more to the Leaf Nismo than looks. Talking to Autocar he said “the Leaf Nismo will have around 10 percent more power than the standard car,” hinting that it would go on sale towards the end of 2012.

“It will also have a weight reduction too as this will bring benefits to handling and range”, Palmer confirmed. “It also gets a ride and handling package to make it more sporty to drive.”

A ten percent improvement in power would take the Leaf’s standard 80 kilowatt motor up to nearer 88 kilowatts, and we assume would also knock a good second or more off the car’s 0-60 time. In fact, we’d hazard a guess that the Leaf Nismo could shave several seconds bit off the Pikes Peak hillclimb time Nissan race car driver Chad Hord set earlier this year in an almost-stock Leaf.

There’s no official word yet on launch schedule, cost or specification, but given the number of people out there who think the Leaf isn’t sporty enough, we think it’ll sell pretty well.

Nissan Unveils High-Performance Juke Nismo Concept

Nissan plans to expand its high performance line of vehicles, and it's targeting the crossover market to do it. The auto manufacturer unveiled the Juke Nismo Concept at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show, announcing that the crossover could get the green light if it proves popular.

The Nissan Juke Nismo concept is a toned-down version of the Juke-R exercise the manufacturer has been promoting through a series of online videos. While the Juke-R borrows the heart and soul of the GT-R to become a compact SUV on steroids, the Juke Nismo is more like a crossover on Adderall.

Its chassis has been lowered and stiffened, and the 1.6-liter turbo engine has been given some unnamed performance treatments to enhance power and speed, although Nissan didn't say by how much. Bigger wheels and an aerodynamic body kit give it a slightly more aggressive stance.

The concept unveiling coincided with Nissan's announcement that it will be expanding the Nismo lineup to include more mainstream vehicles. For the moment, the Nismo treatment has been limited to sports models, such as Nissan's Z-series, but as crossovers begin overtaking sedans and sports cars in popularity, the Juke could be next.

"It depends on the reaction at the Tokyo Motor Show," Chiaki Sumi, chief project specialist for the Juke, said in a news statement. "If it's quite positive, we'll consider introducing it into the market."

Even if it doesn't, you can recreate some of the concept on your own--Nissan said some Juke Nismo parts will be available in the Nismo catalog.

Desmond Howard and Nissan Challange Football Fans to “Innovate the Heisman Pose”

Nissan North America, Inc. (NNA) and 1991 Heisman Trophy winner Desmond Howard today announced the Innovate The Heisman Pose contest, challenging college football fans to take the iconic symbol of gridiron greatness to the next level. Launched on the brand’s U.S. Facebook page, fans are asked to submit photos of themselves doing the Heisman pose in the funniest or most creative situation for a chance to attend college football’s biggest game.

One grand prize winner, as determined by Desmond Howard and a panel of Nissan executives, will receive an all-expenses paid trip for two to the Allstate BCS Championship game. Three runners up will receive a trip for two to the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl (2nd Place), Allstate Sugar Bowl (3rd Place), or Discover Orange Bowl (4th Place).

“When I crossed the goal line that day in 1991 and struck the Heisman pose, I had no idea fans would still be emulating it 20 years later,” said Desmond Howard. “To this day, people ask me to strike the pose for photos. After all these years, I’m happy Nissan is giving me the opportunity to turn the tables and see what innovative ideas fans will create.”

Interested applicants can enter their photo on the Innovate The Heisman Pose tab of the Nissan Facebook page found at http://www.facebook.com/nissan. The contest opens November 21, 2011 and submissions will be accepted through 9:00am EST on Wednesday, December 14.

“Nissan is proud to be official partners of both the Heisman Trophy and the Bowl Championship Series, so we wanted to bring those two partnerships together in a fun and engaging way for our Facebook community," said Erich Marx, Director Social Media & Interactive Marketing. “We’re excited to join forces with Desmond Howard, who isn’t only a college football legend, but also created one of the sport’s most iconic images when he struck his famous Heisman pose.”

The 2011-2012 college football season marks the sixth year of Nissan’s sponsorship of the Heisman Trophy and partnership with Sports Illustrated to co-host the Sports Illustrated Heisman Tour Presented by Nissan, a 10-stop national tour and interactive fan experience at the season’s marquee matchups. Additionally, this season Nissan brought 11 former Heisman Trophy winners together under one roof in the Heisman House, creating a series of 45-second spots airing each week before ESPN’s Saturday Night Football on ABC.

The Nissan Juke-R: Surprisingly Street Legal

The Juke-R is a project by Nissan’s European Technology Center and the RML racing team. They took the 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 and six-speed dual-clutch transmission from the GT-R, and literally stuffed it under the body of a Juke, creating an insane all-wheel drive crossover good for 480 hp. Oh, and even though it’s only a concept, it’s street-legal.

Nissan rolling out spiffed-up food trucks

Joining the showroom this year, filled with sports vehicles and decorated concept cars, are none other than…

Food trucks.

The Grilled Cheese Truck and CoolHaus gave out samples in sleek Nissan NV vans, showcasing a design fresh from the more vintage look of most L.A. food trucks.

“Nissan approached us with this sponsored vehicle, and we think it’s a fantastic idea,” said Michelle Grant, CEO of the Grilled Cheese Truck. “Right now we use the standard taco truck. With a more compact vehicle, we’ll be able to reach new spaces.”

CoolHaus, which currently uses refurbished postal trucks, echoed these thoughts.

“It’s definitely smaller – lower height, shorter, more compact,” said CoolHaus CEO Natasha Case, “and in the food truck industry, this space compression really helps being able to park and participate in smaller venues. Say a venue has space for 10 trucks plus a half, we can now be that half.”

With a larger manufacturer now offering vans, Case noted the benefits of having a new vehicle with better power and mileage. “Also, if you have a problem, it means you can now take it to the dealer.”

133993120-16135442
The Nissan NV, released in the U.S. this summer, is its first commercial vehicle in the U.S. market. The three models (NV1500, 2500 and 3500) offer a standard or high-top roof and a V-6 or V-8 engine. Features include chrome bumpers, cargo area worklights, eight-way power driver’s seat, Bluetooth system and upgraded audio systems. Base prices range from $24,950 for a standard-roof NV1500 to $30,150 for a high-roof NV3500

“It’s a unique product for us,” said Mark Perry, Nissan’s director of product planning. “This is really all about innovation, to have a little fun, because there’s been really nothing for this industry.”

Perry noted that in this category, contractors have had a few choices, like GM, Ford, Dodge: “All well-established,” he said, “but older technology.”

The NV also provides an outfitting service—building and installing up to 60 square feet of graphics, designed by the buyer, on the vehicle.

"It’s cool, futuristic-looking. Right now, our trucks are more a nod to the past – vintage," said Case. “It really shows that the food truck industry is here to stay and expand."

The food truck craze has been taking off in recent years, revived by the gourmet trend. The L.A. Times reported in May that Americans are expected to spend $630 million on food this year from mobile vendors, according to the National Restaurant Assn. That's up from $608 million in 2010.

“We’re currently in four cities, but having a larger manufacturer like this really would enable us to have consistency across the country,” Case said. “Rather than hoping for the best with a local purchase."

“It brings a legitimacy to the food truck industry that we’re starving for.”

Nissan LEAF Lights Up Yokohama Tower

The Yokohama Marine Tower was lit up Wednesday night courtesy of electricity from the batteries in a Nissan LEAF.

Nissan is lending some battery power to the local 106-meter-tall Japanese landmark in Yokohama, the capital city of the Kanagawa Prefecture of Japan, which is located about 27 miles south of Tokyo.

Lighting
In fact, the tower's night twinkle will be powered by a Nissan LEAF channeling electricity to the tower from its batteries via a connected power control system until November 6.

The publicity stunt is part of the Yokohama Marine Tower's 50th Anniversary celebration and Yokohama Port's 150th anniversary celebration.

The tower, which looks like a cross between the Eiffel Tower and a lighthouse, was built in 1961 to commemorate the port's 100th anniversary and since then has seen more than 25 million visitors. It's famous for offering an unlimited view of Mount Fuji from its observation deck.

Why Yokohama? Well, aside from being the location of Nissan's world headquarters, the city is also known for striving to be one of the most environmental cities in Japan.

2012 Nissan JUKE: Exhilaration for All

2012-nissan-juke
Boasting a uniquely dynamic combination of style, performance and fuel-efficiency, the Nissan JUKE was unlike anything else on the market when it was first introduced for the 2011 model year. And since the competition still hasn’t caught up, Nissan has made only minor changes to the 2012 version.

That means the JUKE still holsters a turbocharged Direct Injection Gasoline (DIG) I4 engine that squeezes 188 hp and 177 lb.-ft. of torque out of just 1.6 liters of displacement and can be mated to one of two transmissions: an Xtronic continuously variable transmission (CVT) with performance-enhancing S-Mode or, with the front-wheel-drive JUKE SV or SL, a six-speed manual. Xtronic offers a further bonus, too, because the CVT allows drivers to add a torque-vectoring AWD system to the JUKE. This setup not only can adjust the torque distribution between the front and back wheels—sending up to 50 percent to the rears—but it also can vary the torque from side to side. The result: Reduced understeer and improved steering feel while cornering.

The 2012 JUKE also retains on its spec sheet:

  • Efficient EPA ratings of 27 mpg city/32 mpg highway/29 mpg combined
  • Eye-popping looks, with a high-profile exterior and an athletic cabin,
  • featuring bolstered front seats and, for a further reminder of the JUKE’s nature, a center console that takes its cues from motorcycle fuel tanks
  • A console-mounted shift lever
  • 60/40 fold-down rear seats
  • A rearview camera system
  • Nissan’s Intelligent Key with push-button start
  • Navigation
  • The automaker’s I-CON driver interface system with three driving modes—Sport, Normal and Eco
  • Standard Bluetooth capability, including hands-free phone functionality
  • Standard iPod connectivity
  • A premium six-speaker sound system with available 8-inch Rockford Fosgate subwoofer

Juke-R: The World’s Fastest Crossover

What happens when a car company takes the engine from its most powerful, most expensive sports car and shoe-horns it into one of its compact entry-level crossovers?

In Nissan’s case you get the Juke-R, a slammed, tire-shredding version of the controversially-styled Juke crossover powered by the 480-horsepower turbocharged V6 motor from the company’s flagship GT-R. Nissan unveiled the concept vehicle as a “surprise guest” at the end of a press conference for another vehicle in Spain.

Ob-qh357_juke_e_20111026130602
Nissan says the engine swap makes the Juke-R the world’s fastest crossover. However, the GT-R’s V6 was not an easy fit in the space designed for the Juke’s 1.6-litre four-cylinder. The team at RML, a U.K. motorsports specialist hired to build the Juke-R for Nissan, had to essentially build the car around the engine and its large, complex cooling system.

Nissan says RML will build two Juke-Rs – one with left-hand drive and one right-hand-drive version. Testing is to begin next month. A Nissan spokesman says the company plans to eventually turn out production versions of the vehicle.

Nissan's Mid-Size Car is This Year's Big Seller

Nissan's American-built mid-size car, the Altima, is catching on with car buyers this year.

Through the first nine months of 2011, the pleasantly styled and well-powered Altima posted U.S. sales of more than 200,000 and outsold a perennial top seller, the Honda Accord. The Altima also was the fifth most popular car or truck in the United States in sales last month, and its September sales were just 495 shy of the month's total Toyota Camry sales.

The Accord and Camry traditionally are No. 1 and 2, respectively, in U.S. car sales.

The sales gains aren't just because the Nissan was able to resume production faster than Honda and Toyota after the big earthquake in Japan early this year and have readily available cars on dealer lots.

The five-passenger Altima, which made its U.S. debut in the 1993 model year, has been coming into its own for a while, Nissan officials said.

Buyers find the 2012 Altima largely unchanged from the 2011 version, which has been known for spunky performance, comfortable ride and easy-to-use controls and gauges. The 2012 models with four-cylinder engine also are competitive in fuel mileage, ranking seventh overall among non-diesel and non-hybrid 2012 mid-size sedans.

2011-10-20_1239
Adding to the appeal: The Altima, with above average reliability, is a recommended buy of Consumer Reports.

And the 2012 sedan earned four out of five stars for passenger protection in a frontal crash and five out of five stars for side crash protection.

Plus, it's built in not one, but two assembly plants in the United States — Smyrna, Tenn., and Canton, Miss.

The biggest change for Altima for 2012 is that the slow-selling, high-priced, gasoline-electric Altima hybrid sedan is no longer being produced.

Starting manufacturer's suggested retail price, including destination charge, for the 2012 Altima sedan is $21,170. This is for the base 2.5 model with 175-horsepower, four-cylinder gasoline engine and continuously variable transmission (CVT) that a driver operates like an automatic transmission. The upscale Altima 3.5 SR sedan, which has sport-tuned suspension and 270-horsepower V-6, has a starting retail price, including destination charge, of $26,190.

In comparison, the competing, mid-size 2012 Ford Fusion sedan has a starting MSRP, including destination charge, of $20,645 with 175-horsepower four-cylinder engine and manual transmission. The lowest retail price for a 2012 Fusion with automatic is $21,540, which is $370 more than the base Altima.

The 2012 Honda Accord sedan with 177-horsepower four cylinder and manual transmission starts at $22,150, or $980 more than the base Altima. With automatic, the 2012 Accord sedan starts at $22,950.

The Altima also is sold as a two-door, five-seat coupe with a starting MSRP, including destination charge, of $24,360. This base coupe comes with 175-horsepower four cylinder and manual transmission. The lowest starting retail price for a 2012 Altima Coupe with automatic is $24,860.

The test Altima was the mid-range 2.5 S sedan that topped out at more than $26,000 with power driver seat, moonroof, Bluetooth connectivity, dual climate control and alloy wheels among the options. With standard curtain air bags, traction and stability control, the tester did not have leather-trimmed seats or navigation system.

The test Altima immediately impressed with its power. The 2.5-liter, double overhead cam four cylinder moved the car quickly and in sprightly fashion on city streets and country roads.

There was engine buzziness on uphill sections of highway, but the car still kept up with traffic.

The CVT worked well, without making passengers hear a lot of high-engine revving. In fact, it was one of the best experiences I've had with a four-cylinder and CVT working together smoothly to power a sizable car that's nearly 16 feet long.

The Altima's steering was nicely responsive, too, and better than expected. I appreciated that the car came with both tilt and telescope steering column, so I could adjust the wheel to the best spot for me.

The interior was quite quiet, and I didn't hear much from passing trucks or motorcycles. I didn't notice wind noise, either.

Fabric seats looked and felt good, and side windows in front and back were good-sized. But back-seat headroom was about an inch less than what's in the Fusion and Accord. All gauges, buttons and knobs were easy to understand and within reach. I was especially impressed by the huge Altima glovebox with nearly half a cubic foot of space.

Cubbies on the doors were large enough to hold 20-ounce drinks, and there were three cupholders in the console between driver and front passenger — a nice touch.

There also was a handy covered cubby at the base of the middle of the dashboard that was just right for storing a cell phone.

It is, however, easy to drive the four-cylinder Altima with gusto, because it powers along so easily. Often, I found myself going over the speed limit in the city, but I still averaged 26.5 miles per gallon in travel that was 70 percent city driving.

This was enough to go 530 miles on a single tank of regular gasoline, because the Altima's big tank holds 20 gallons. In comparison, the Accord's gas tank is 18.5 gallons.

For the record, the four-cylinder Altima is rated at 23 mpg in the city and 32 on the highway.

Unfortunately, there already have been two safety recalls of the 2012 Altimas. One, announced in July, was for certain 2011 and 2012 Altimas that had suspension bolts that weren't tightened to specification and could lead to vibration and possible loss of vehicle control.

The second recall, announced in August, was due to an air bag control unit not being assembled properly. This could mean the air bag wouldn't properly inflate in a crash.

Nissan: Plug-in Potential Sets Standards

Nissan and Japanese university technicians have reportedly developed new technology that will fully charge batteries in electric vehicles in 10 minutes.

Breakthrough improvements in capacitor technology is leading the automotive industry to a fast-charging standard that will make owning an electric vehicle (EV) easier.

An existing fast-charge standard is so far only applicable to Europe and the United States. Carmakers that have signed up to it include BMW, Daimler, Ford, General Motors and Volkswagen, including VW group brands Audi and Porsche.

The result will be that all future EVs from the collaborating carmakers will be able to use the same type of fast charger, as well as products from other brands that subsequently adopt the standard.

Nissan's development involves a switch from battery technology to capacitor technology.

Reports describe a capacitor that replaces carbon in its electrode with tungsten oxide and vanadium oxide, enabling it to hold more power.

Scczen_leaf_1_460x230

Under testing, the capacitor could reportedly be fully charged in just 10 minutes while offering almost the same energy-storage capacity and voltage as a lithium-ion battery. However, it is expected to take 10 years for the technology to become commercially viable, by which time it should help carmakers reduce EV production costs while making them far more appealing to consumers.

Capacitors are already used in micro-hybrid applications such as PSA Peugeot Citroen's e-HDI system, which uses regenerative braking to first store charge in a capacitor before being fed into the conventional 12V battery or used to provide a quick burst of energy to restart the engine after idle-stop has activated.

Nissan has also spearheaded a joint-venture with European electrical supply equipment companies Circutor, DBT, Efacec, Endesa and Siemens that is hoped to grow quick-charge points on the continent through a halving of equipment costs.

In the US, Nissan has recently reduced the price of the home-charging system for customers of its Leaf EV.

In addition to the infrastructure and consumer advantages, manufacturers will benefit from a reduction in complexity when designing vehicles, plus associated economies of scale.

The proposed system must not only feature a standardised charging connector but integrate all possible charging scenarios, much like the Universal Serial Bus (USB) standard introduced for computers and other electronic devices in the mid-1990s.

Carmakers using existing Level 1 and Level 2 connectors agree that standardisation increases the public take-up of EVs.

As such, the new system will be backwards-compatible with connector standards in the US and Europe.

Ford vice-president of international government affairs Steve Biegun told Australian website GoAuto that the company understood the importance of providing "technologically innovative solutions that are convenient for our customers".

"It's part of our 'One Ford' vision and a key factor in our company's overall success," he said.

"We applied the same philosophy in working with other global carmakers and governments to offer one common approach on charging electric vehicles - helping speed infrastructure development, strengthen economic growth and, most importantly, make charging even more convenient for our customers."
