Nissan shows the LEAF isn’t a winter wuss

Nissan-leaf-snow-driving-main

If you live in Los Angeles or, indeed, London, then extreme weather really isn’t really an issue. Running a Nissan LEAF pure-electric car in such climes doesn’t represent much of a challenge, but spare a thought for those facing a daily commute in a Canadian or Norwegian winter.

Well, the author speaks from experience as an ex-native of Ottawa, Canada’s capital city. Most diplomats posted there receive hardship pay on account of ferocious winters when temperatures of 20 below zero are not uncommon (and that’s before factoring in wind chill).

Surely this environment would kill a LEAF stone dead, or at least reduce range so that you’d measure it in feet instead of miles? Well, Nissan would like to assure us that its pure-electric isn’t afraid of plunging mercury and a few pesky snow flakes. To that end, the company has produced a video (below) where LEAFs are put through their paces in snowy Hokkaido in the north of Japan.

Interesting stuff – we learn from Chief Vehicle Engineer Hidetoshi Kadota that the capacity of the battery is unchanged in minus nine or ten degrees Celcius, with the same capacity as it would have at 25 deg C. Unsurprisingly, though, if you throw some Canadian temperature at it, capacity decreases. To combat this, Nissan offers a battery warmer

He also makes the point that unlike a petrol engine, which produces heat as a byproduct of combustion, the LEAF actually needs to heat fluid to operate the cabin heater, hence the big drain on the battery. Apparently, Nissan is working on more efficient heating solutions so that Canadians and Norwegians can go that bit further on a charge.

Nissan Quest van has unusual touches

539w

The Nissan Quest, which had been dropped for a couple years and re-emerged as a fourth-generation 2011 model, is back for 2012 with unique touches.

Seats have special padding and front-seat heaters that arguably are the fastest-acting in the business. An odor-avoidance system goes high-tech with grape polyphenol filtering.

There's no tugging or fighting with electronic sliding side doors in this minivan, because they work without fuss. Nissan says the sliding door entryways also are lower than in other vans, which helps youngsters get inside and out. And no one risks a hernia taking a Quest seat out to make room for cargo. The seats are designed to stow in place and can't be removed on a whim.

The Quest even looks a bit different from other minivans. It has a noticeably flat roof and styling that makes it look larger than it is.

And in top-of-the-line LE form, the 2012 Quest competes as a decked-out luxury van.

Starting manufacturer's suggested retail price, including destination charge, is $28,560 for the base 2012 Quest S with 260-horsepower V-6 and continuously variable transmission.

The top-selling minivan in calendar 2011 was the Toyota Sienna, which has a starting retail price of $25,870 with 187-horsepower, four-cylinder engine and $27,110 with 266-horsepower V-6. All 2012 Siennas come with automatic transmission. The second most popular minivan last year, the Dodge Grand Caravan, has a starting MSRP, including destination charge, of $21,830 for 2012. This is for an American Value Package Grand Caravan with 283-horsepower V-6 and automatic transmission.

Why ask if buyers know that Nissan has a minivan again?

Despite its unique features, the Quest's 2011 calendar-year sales of 12,199 were at the bottom of U.S. minivan sales.

Sienna and Grand Caravan each sold more than 110,000 vans last year. Even Volkswagen sold a few hundred more of its Routan minivans than Nissan did of the Quest.

Nissan's Quest can surprise drivers. It's some 16 feet long, but the turning circle is on par.

The step inside the Quest is accommodatingly low for elderly and younger passengers, and fixed grab handles at the sliding door entryways are positioned just right to help steady passengers getting in and out.

Nissan's tried-and-true 3.5-liter, double overhead cam V-6 delivers capable power for this 4,300-plus-pound vehicle. Drivers won't compare the Quest to a sports car, but the vehicle isn't slow and stodgy, either, as the engine delivers a good 240 foot-pounds of torque at 4,400 rpm. In fact, the test Quest merged with vigor into traffic and maintained its pace in traffic without fuss. Throttle response was quick.

The Quest's torque compares with 245 foot-pounds at a higher 4,700 rpm in the V-6-powered Sienna and 260 foot-pounds at 4,400 rpm in the Grand Caravan.

Nissan only offers the Quest with front-wheel drive, and during some startups, the strong engine power hit the front wheels with force. Drivers had best keep both hands on the steering wheel at these times, because the wheel can feel as if it's tugging to one side or the other.

The test Quest, a top LE, impressed with its airy and spacious feel inside.  It rode nicely on virtually all road surfaces. The front independent strut suspension and rear multi-link kept bumps away from passengers, with some vibration coming through now and then.

There is a sense of body mass and weight shifting when the 6-foot-tall Quest goes into curves and around corners, but the ride overall was well controlled and not wallowy.

The interior was quiet except on windy days, when wind noise was noticeable from around the outside mirrors.

The LE came with a good, 13-speaker, Bose sound system that delivered awesome tunes. But the radio volume button on the dashboard was located around the other side of the shift lever when it was in "Drive" in the center stack and was not visible to the driver. Good thing the radio volume also could be controlled by a button on the steering wheel.

With one, quick lift of a plastic lever, second-row seats fold flat. Third-row seats go down just as easily after a tug on each release strap. Even with these five seats folded down, there's a lot more storage space in a cavity in the floor by the back bumper.

Access to the third-row bench seat could be better in the Quest. The two separate middle seats — no second-row bench is offered — have seatbacks that tilt forward and then the whole seat slides forward. But it can still be awkward as passengers step up and over the seat tracks to get into the third row.

In the tester, the hard head restraints in the third row were positioned in a bad spot for me. They locked into place in only one position, which put the protruding area of each head restraint at the part of my head where neck meets lower skull cap. I had to recline the seatback more than I would have preferred so I could reduce the pressure that the head restraint put on my head.

The Quest is the only minivan on the market with a CVT, which is designed to maximize fuel economy.

But the Quest's government rating of 21 miles per gallon in city driving and 24 mpg on the highway is lower than the 22/28-mpg rating that the federal government gives the 2012 Honda Odyssey minivan with V-6 and automatic transmission.

And, the test Quest LE averaged just 16.9 mpg in driving that was 70 percent city travel and 30 percent on the highways.

Nissan taking orders for new GT3-spec Nismo GT-R

Nismo-gt3web

What would a Nissan GT-R be without the racing pedigree that's helped make it what it is today? The truth is that we don't even want to know. But we don't have to, because the car known as Godzilla is as devastating on the race track as it is on the street.

Very different racing versions have been made to challenge the FIA GT1 World Championship and for Japan's own Super GT series, the latter powered by a naturally aspirated V8 to satisfy regulations instead of the twin-turbo V6 in the production model. Getting your hands on either of these, however, could prove a bigger challenge than passing one in a race. Fortunately, Nissan has just released a competition-spec GT-R you can buy.

Co-developed by Nismo (Nissan's in-house tuning department) and JR Motorsports (which campaigns a pair of GT-Rs in the aforementioned GT1 series), the GT3-spec model first debuted at the Magny-Cours circuit in France back in August, but is now available for order by privateer teams and gentlemen racers alike. It packs the same 3.8-liter twin-turbo V6 as the production model, tuned to deliver 523 horsepower.

That may be slightly less than the current production model (due to the constrictions of GT3 regs) but the Nismo GT3 model also offers a fully adjustable suspension, stripped-out interior with roll cage and all the trimmings, extra cooling ducts and an aggressive aero package. The extra grip is where the extra speed comes from, and it can all be yours for a hair under 300,000 euros, or about $390k at today's rates.

2012 Nissan GT-R: A street legal supercar

Image

Most drivers are probably familiar with the Nissan 370Z sports car. But fewer are aware of an even higher performance coupe that has been in the Nissan fleet for more than three years.

At a base price of nearly $90,000, the Nissan GT-R is an elite track star that blows the doors off most street-legal production models and sends exotics like Lotus into a defensive posture.

The 530-horsepower, twin-turbo V6 engine and track-tuned suspension performed amazing feats when I first drove it on a racetrack. But the car's real potential emerged when I rode with a professional test-car driver who drifted through hairpin turns without hitting the brakes, relying solely on the paddle shifters for the dual-clutch, six-speed automatic transmission.

I couldn't hope to reproduce that performance with a 2012 review model on city streets. But I discovered that the GT-R is actually serviceable in routine driving.

The GT-R has four seats, though the two in back are probably better suited for smaller folks. For the driver, visibility is as good as you would expect from, say, a Chevrolet Camaro.

Despite its performance credentials, the GT-R presents a fairly conventional interior with intuitive controls on the dash and center console. Nissan's theme in developing the GT-R was "the ultimate supercar that can be driven by anyone, anytime, anywhere."

GT-R is built on Nissan's Premium Midship platform, which creates the first independent rear transaxle, all-wheel drive system. The system places the transmission, transfer case and final drive at the rear of the vehicle, improving weight distribution and handling.

To adjust vehicle settings, the driver is provided by a "set-up switch" in the center of the instrument panel to set transmission shifts, shock absorbers and the Vehicle Dynamic Control among three settings: Normal, Special or "R," for performance handling.

For 2013 models going on sale this month, the suspension has been retuned and horsepower has increased to 545 horses.

The front end of the GT-R rides low to the ground, so extra caution is required in approaching driveway ramps. The supercar's aerodynamics were improved last year with increased down force and the coefficient of drag reduced to 0.26 from 0.27. A new front fascia with aggressive double rectifier fins and integrated high intensity LED running lights was also added, enhancing the muscular appearance.

Other exterior features include high-mounted LED stoplights, bright LED rear combination taillights, "super wide beam" headlights, heated door mirrors and flat-blade windshield wipers. Six exterior colors are available for 2013.

Sculpted performance bucket seats give the driver and passenger a comfortable driving experience, and soft pads on the dash in front of the passenger and both doors add a layer of comfort.

GT-R's cockpit-style instrument panel surrounds the driver, with all meters at the same height to require less head movement. A large center-mounted tachometer, with gear display on its upper right, gives the driver instant detailed information, which is considered essential for the performance nature of the car. A large, metallic-framed center console features an ergonomically designed shift lever and a red "engine start" button.

The centerpiece of the instrument panel is a display that includes mechanical and driving data, acceleration, brake pedal pressure, steering angle and a recording function with playback.

"It's our desire to keep pushing the envelope, to never settle for second best or second place -- a philosophy that makes Nissan GT-R one of the most coveted and affordable supercars in the world today," said Brian Carolin, Nissan senior vice president.

Nissan unveil new GT-R NISMO GT3

NISSAN MOTORSPORTS INTERNATIONAL CO. LTD. (NISMO) is pleased to announce the official release of a Nissan GT-R (R35) that conforms to FIA GT3 regulations: the Nissan GT-R NISMO GT3.

NISMO and JR Motorsports (JRM), its official partner for this major project, have been jointly developing the car during 2011 and, following a series of extensive tests – which have included three competitive outings - the car’s performance and durability has proven its credentials for GT3 racing worldwide.

The Nissan GT-R NISMO GT3 features a 3.8 V6 twin-turbo engine that is based on a standard road car unit, developing 530ps at 6400 rpm. Power is delivered via six-speed transaxle that drives the rear wheels, activated by a semi-automatic paddle-shift system.

Designed with customers in mind, driveability has been an important factor in the new car’s development programme. Therefore, as well as featuring a chassis that inspires confidence, suspension set-up and driver controls can easily be adjusted to suit a range of preferences.

The car is to be displayed in the UK at Autosport International (Europe’s biggest motorsport exhibition) on Thursday 12th January, where it will be unveiled on the JRM exhibition stand. It will then be displayed for the remaining three day’s of the show. The car will appear alongside the GT1 Nissan GT-R that won the 2011 FIA GT1 World Championship.

To celebrate the launch, JRM will simultaneously run the Nissan GT-R NISMO GT3 as an official Nissan Europe entry in the Dubai 24-hour race, where it will be driven by four Nissan Champions from 2011: Michael Krumm, Alex Buncombe, Tom Kimber-Smith and Franck Malliaux.

Sales and customer support for the Nissan GT-R NISMO GT3 will be implemented by NISMO for Japan, Asia, North America, South America, and Oceania, whilst JRM will cover Europe, Russia and the Middle East.

Nissan boss in U.S. predicts big growth

Infinitix-large

Nissan is predicting that it is "poised for growth" this year -- with 20 new or refreshed vehicles launching in the next two years.

The new Infiniti JX goes on sales in the summer and a new Altima sedan hits next fall. But the most attention may go, as usual, to the Nissan Leaf, which is moving its production line to Smyrna, Tenn., right next door to its battery plant.

All of that is going to mean more jobs, says Bill Krueger, vice chairman for Nissan Americas. Plants in Mexico and elsewhere are maxed out, so the only way to add output for refreshing economy is to add shifts in the U.S. "We haven't fulfilled our full potential yet as a company," he said at the Automotive News World Congress.

Ex-Detroit Lion Barry Sanders to help Nissan unveil its Pathfinder SUV concept

Bilde
Barry Sanders will make a rare media appearance as part of Nissan’s events at the North American International Auto Show.
Sanders will be part of a Nissan party for the media Monday evening at Cheli’s Chili Bar after Nissan reveals a Pathfinder SUV concept and a commercial van at the auto show.
Nissan landed the former Detroit Lions Hall of Fame running back as a result of its partnership with the Heisman Trophy Trust, which each year crowns the best college player of the year with the prestigious Heisman Trophy.
The automaker also is an official partner for the Bowl Championship Series, and the final college football bowl game of the season, between LSU and Alabama takes place on Monday.
The Japanese automaker is returning to the North American Detroit Auto Show this year for the first time since 2008.
“Come early to grab a good seat,” Sanders says in a video invite sent to reporters. “We promise you great food, great beverages and great football.”
Sanders won the Heisman in 1988 when he played for Oklahoma State. He played for the Detroit Lions from 1989 to 1998 and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2004.
